Official badges were issued by the Games Organizing Committee to identify athletes and officials at the Games. The first badges were issued at the 1896 Athens Olympic Games in cardboard. The first metal badges were issued to identify jury members at the 1900 Paris Games. Ribbons were introduced at the 1904 St. Louis Games. The use of badges reached its zenith at the 1952 Helsinki Games when 214 different badges were issued.
